So I'm back in the US and things are, for lack of a better word, different. I'm happy that bathrooms are consistently clean (even if they're 'dirty' here I'll still take it), people speak English, and that no one is staring at me as though I have a horn protruding from my forehead. But, I miss China and it's strangeness somehow, my stay was far too short. There wasn't an adequate amount of time allotted for everyone to both get acquainted with the surroundings and learn to enjoy the new area, people and culture with wider eyes and better understanding. Eh.. I'll go back soon, when work (you know... the job I don't have yet) permits. Hopefully Chinese fluency is in my not-so-near future.
Last Friday I was delighted to discover that my friends had lied to me. That day, Aliza, Robyn, Laura, Alex and I were supposed to see Rent and possibly go dancing for a few hours afterwards. I, naturally, was running late due to midtown Christmas-related traffic along with my own personal inability to leave my home on schedule. Those who know me well are already aware that my consistent tardiness is due to the half-naked concerts I give before leaving. No, it's not as bad as it sounds...though it might be, lol. Armed with my faux microphone and stereo remote I proceed to lip sync and dance around like an idiot to the music played a bit too loudly in the background. Mmmmm yes, it's good to be home....
So about this lie, I didn't see Rent that night, nor was I drunken fool on some colorfully lit dance floor. I opened the door to my Gramercy apartment to find 20-25 people yelling "Surprise!". After backing up and taking off my glasses I wasn't sure to make of it, this was my very first surprise party. Decorations were up, thanks Laura and whoever helped her, and the sign on the wall read "Welcome to America Camari". Each letter was cut out with Laura's special scrapbook scissors for extra cuteness. (Lots of) hugging then took place followed by food. My old roommates made sure all of it was American, thanks Alex R. for making the pizza bagels, and Aliza, the macaronie con queso. Robyn probably handled the Evite and threatened people not to tell me. Apparently some unconsciously let out hints at different points in time but my dumb ass couldn't put the pieces together. Ah well, it's better this way so I'm pleased with my own idiocy for once. Thanks Robyn, and everyone else who helped/just showed up.
I just finished reading The Giver, by Lois Lowry, for the third time. Thanks Kenny. It made me think of the carefree days of grade school when the same book captivated me. What's funny is that it took so long to read it back then, now the thick pages couldn't flip fast enough to keep with my eye's speed it seemed. Chapters passed in a matter of minutes but I didn't mind. Such a good book.
Look Jason, a Chinese-free entry just for you
